Styrene synthesis via controlled decomposition of a hydroxyaldehyde

This project investigates the trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) facilitated formation of styrenes in a one-pot synthesis reaction. Percent yields are reported for differing aldehydes and provide incite into the conditions that drive the formation of the major styrene product. A proposed mechanism explains this process but has yet to be proven experimentally. Future research into this reaction will provide more concrete information about the mechanism by which the hydroxyaldehydes react with TMSOTf and a base in order to form the styrene.
