Investigating the impact of astrocytes on the resistance of melanoma brain metastases to targeted therapy

In this study, we used astrocyte conditioned media and co-cultures of primary astrocytes to focus on resistance mechanisms to MEK inhibition (MEKi). We found that the interaction of melanoma cells with astrocytes increased melanoma sensitivity to MEKi due to ID3 down-regulation. Exactly how ID3 modulates resistance to MAPK inhibition remains unresolved and elucidating this underlying mechanism may provide insight into improving the treatment of melanoma brain metastases.
