Fala: Through the Lens of Zarefsky's Fourth Distinction

Oliver Vettoretti

In my project I analyze Fala, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's beloved dog, with Zarefsky's Fourth Distinction. I posit that Fala humanized Roosevelt and distracted the American public and media from Roosevelt's disability and failing health. In my project I use famous figures and events in American history to support my claim about Fala's significance to Roosevelt's image. Without Fala, I think it is unlikely that Roosevelt would have won the historic fourth presidential term he did. I think that my project, which includes my paper and presentation, will contribute to others' understanding and appreciation for all that works in the service of presidential image and symbols that communicate and contribute to that image.
