Expire

Julia Straka

Expire is a dance piece performed by three University Dancers company members to Organum by Max Reichter. Expire deals with themes of anxiety and breath as related to the pandemic. Breath is often used in meditation and other practices to ease anxiety, but the pandemic has created anxiety around breath, the air, and what may be contaminating it. The airborne nature of the virus, the constricting nature of masks, and the lung-damaging effects of the disease itself reflect the suffocation the COVID-19 pandemic brings, both physically and symbolically, and the strife for breath in my piece. My piece incorporates fog, which makes the air on stage surrounding my dancers visible and serves to represent the substances in the air making it difficult, or dangerous, to breathe.
